When nuclear fission technology was in its early stages, many believed it could become the primary energy source in the U.S., and gasoline would become obsolete. The development of nuclear-powered submarines and ships during the 1940s and 50s led car designers to begin conceptualizing atomic vehicles.
Last month, we asked our audience: What was Ford’s 1975 nuclear-powered concept car called? Ford Atomic Cruiser was the most voted for at 36 percent, while Ford Fusion and Ford Nucleon received 29 percent of the vote. Ford Fission received the least amount of votes at seven percent.
The correct answer is Ford Nucleon. This vehicle was to be powered by a small nuclear reactor in the rear of the vehicle. The car was to use a steam engine powered by uranium fission, similar to those found in nuclear submarines. The original model can be viewed at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI.
