Consumers Energy has completed its Mid-Michigan Pipeline project and replaced and upgraded 55 miles of natural gas transmission pipeline in five counties, the company said Monday.

“Our friends and neighbors count on us to safely and affordably heat their homes and businesses, and we take that responsibility seriously,” said David Hicks, the Consumers Energy vice president who oversaw the project. “The Mid-Michigan Pipeline and our other pipeline projects play a central role in Consumers Energy’s Natural Gas Delivery Plan to ensure we meet Michigan’s needs for decades to come.”

The two-phase, $550 million project consisted of replacing vintage 20-inch pipelines dating back to the 1940s with new 36-inch pipelines that will help Consumers Energy move natural gas more quickly, safely, and efficiently.

The first phase was completed in 2023, and construction on the second phase started this year, meeting the company’s deadline to complete work in time for the winter heating season.

The Mid-Michigan project is the last in a series of major projects that represent a nearly $1.5 billion investment to modernize the company’s natural gas system, according to Consumers Energy.

Most recently, Consumers Energy also completed the four-county Saginaw Trail Pipeline in 2020 and the South Oakland Macomb Network, which it finished in 2022.
