September Poll Insights

Last month, we asked our audience which method is primarily used to store excess electricity in the grid? Overall, the most voted for answer was Fuel Cells at 48 percent. Pumped Hydro received the second most votes at 38 percent. In third place, Solar Panels received 10 percent of the vote. Finally, Wind Turbines received three percent.

The correct answer is Pumped Hydro. Pumping water back behind hydroelectric dams has been used for decades as a form of storage that absorbs excess generation from the grid and generates electricity later when needed. As of 2020, the United States had over 24 GW of storage capacity of which 22.9 GW were pumped hydroelectric storage.
